Kramer vs. Kramer (1979)

This is an oldie but a must watch. The film follows a just-divorced man, Ted Kramer (played by Dustin Hoffman), who has to learn how to take care of his son on his own, after his wife Joanna (played by Meryl Streep) leaves. Ted has to turn his life upside down to learn how to care for his son, and when he finally learns how to do so, his wife returns and he is forced to fight in court to keep custody of his son.

You watch at Ted and his son figure out how to function together and before your eyes Ted becomes the Dad he was truly meant to be. When his wife returns and puts the father son relationship into jeopardy you will actually get mad at Joanna! She left, so why would she deserve to gain custody?? Unfortunately the movie takes place in the late 1970s when fathers rarely won custody battles…

You will have to watch the movie to find out how it all ends up though…

Remember the Titans (2000)

Screen Shot 2015-03-11 at 10.18.48 PM (2)

This film is based on the true story of an African American coach and his high school football team during their first season after their schools were integrated to form T.C. Williams High School. This integration occurred under a federal mandate in 1971 in Virginia, which proves to be a challenging setting for this football team to thrive in.

Screen Shot 2015-03-12 at 12.04.16 AM Screen Shot 2015-03-12 at 12.04.57 AM

The movie begins with the team going to their summer training camp. This is where the magic happens. The film is able to depict how the teammates slowly started to trust each other and build friendships regardless of race. By the time they leave their camp they are truly a team.

The team still has to face adversity, challenges and tragedy as they work their way to the State Championship. By the end of the movie you wont be able to help yourself, you will be rooting not only for the team but also the boys and their coach. And in perfect fashion, the movie ends with information about where each of the players ended up long term.

Overall, this is one of the best sports movies, and if you haven’t seen it I think you may have been living under a rock for the last decade and a half… 😉

My Girl (1991)

Screen Shot 2015-02-16 at 10.31.37 PM (2)

In Madison, Pennsylvania in 1972 an unlikely friendship develops between Vada (played by Anna Chlumsky) and Thomas (played by Macauley Culkin), two young kids on summer vacation. Vada lives in the Sultenfuss Parlor, a funeral home owned and run her father. The fact that Vada is a hypochondriac and her grandmother randomly starts singing adds a comedic flare to the movie.

However, when Thomas, “who is allergic to everything” goes looking for Vada’s lost ring near a bee hive they knocked down, right after the two share their first ever kiss, you know something is about to go wrong. This is where the tears come on, guaranteed.

Love Story (1970)

Screen Shot 2015-02-16 at 7.12.06 PM (2)
Warning: this is a tearjerker. Watch at your own risk!

This is the love story of two young college students, Jenny (played by Ali MacGraw) and Oliver (played by Ryan O’Neal). The relationship between this Harvard boy and Radcliffe girl begins with curt language and sexual innuendoes, which makes it easy to love them immediately. Unfortunately, you know from the very first line of the movie that they do not have a fairy tale ending.

This movie is one of my all-time favourite movies. Although this movie is classified as a romance, it is also simultaneously a tragedy. You wont be able to help your self, you will fall in love with Jenny and Oliver. You will crack a smile at how Oliver proposes or how they speak to one another and your heart will swell watching them playing in the snow together because you can see the love between them growing. The two work together to create a life together, and when it seems as though they are out of their tough times, they are blindsided. You will have to watch the movie to find out what blindsides them.

The perfect take home message from this movie was that “love means never having to say you’re sorry” and that true love can really withstand anything.

Pretty Woman (1990)

Screen Shot 2015-02-10 at 10.35.03 PM (2)

When you first think about it, a romance between a high powered executive and a prostitute doesn’t sound like it has the makings of a great romance movie BUT this movie was an instant hit and became a favourite of anyone who watched it. I am no different, EVERY single time this movie is on TV I watch it and I am happy to report that it is on Netflix too!

IF you haven’t seen this movie, well I’m less than impressed… and firmly order you to watch it. Despite their backgrounds, Edward and Vivian eventually figure out they make a perfect pair. This movie was relatively early in Julia Roberts’ career but in my opinion it is by for one of her best performances. Richard Gere isn’t too bad himself:P

Sabrina (1954)

Screen Shot 2015-02-08 at 10.07.26 PM (2)

Humphrey Bogart, Audrey Hepburn and William Holden… could you ask for a better cast? This 1954 film had the makings to be a classic romance film from the time its cast was chosen! This is another black and white film that needs to be on everyone’s must watch list!

Screen Shot 2015-02-10 at 8.53.03 PM (2)Screen Shot 2015-02-10 at 9.25.30 PM (2)

Charmingly, the movie begins with the fairy tale tag line “Once upon a time..” outlining immediately that this was the modern fairy tale! Sabrina Fairchild (played by Audrey Hepburn) was not an heiress or a princess, but instead the daughter of a chauffeur for the Larrabee family. Immediately, Sabrina almost seems like Cinderella, a servant who seemed destined for love and her perfect ever after. It seems that David Larrabee (played by William Holden) was meant to her prince charming, although his track record was anything but fairy tale worthy… What makes things more complicated is that David did not seem to notice Sabrina… but it is not matter since Sabrina leaves for Paris, France to go to culinary school. With all this information laid out within the first few minutes, you will be impatient to see how this fairy tale romance plays out, if it does at all…

It may end in a way you didn’t expect…

Shakespeare in Love (1998)

Screen Shot 2015-02-08 at 8.07.20 PM (2)

Shakespeare In Love takes place in London, England in 1593 during the glory days of Elizabethan theatre. The movie centers on a young playwright named William Shakespeare (played by Joseph Fiennes). The storyline follows his creation of the play Romeo and Juliet, which parallels his romance with Viola De Lesseps (played by Gwyneth Paltrow).

Screen Shot 2015-02-08 at 8.07.37 PM (2)Screen Shot 2015-02-08 at 8.57.06 PM (2)

The tale is full of passion and longing as William and Viola falls in love while William writes the play Romeo and Juliet and rehearsals begin. Unfortunately they are kept apart by status and other obstacles. In the true sense of drama, this movie twists and turns, leaving the viewer curious for what will happen next. Much like Romeo and Juliet, this too is a tragedy. Overall it is an interesting spin on the play and deserves to make it onto the must watch list.
